Memorials of War: Collette Announces New Tour to Commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the WWII D-Day Landing

To commemorate the 75th anniversary of the D-Day Landing this June, Collette has announced a new Memorials of War tour, offering travellers the opportunity to embark on a reflective journey through the cities of London and Paris. The new itinerary will lead guests on an exploration of the historic sites and events surrounding World War II.

“For historical or military film buffs wanting to take a journey back through time, this 10-day tour is particularly relevant. Memorials of War is ideal for travellers wanting to discover the monuments, museums, and landmarks that stand in dedication to the heroic soldiers of the Second World War,” said James Hewlett, Head of Marketing, Collette Australia.

Starting in London, guests can visit the Churchill War Rooms, where they will discover the life and legacy of Winston Churchill, portrayed brilliantly by Gary Oldman in the recent Oscar-winning film The Darkest Hour. From London to Paris, travellers can experience the extraordinary speed of the Eurostar train that transports them to the Pegasus Bridge, which lies across the Caen Canal, renowned for its critical appearance in Cornelius Ryan’s masterpiece The Longest Day (1959).

In Arromanche-les-Bains, a view of the Mulberry Harbor, one of the greatest engineering feats of World War II awaits. Travellers will then visit the Bayeux Cemetery and Memorial, the largest World War II Cemetery of Commonwealth soldiers in France, where they can pay their respects to the 1,800 fallen troops who perished and have no known graves. For a comprehensive history lesson about the D-Day Landings and Europe’s post-war transition, guests will visit the Memorial Peace Museum.

Travellers will then retrace the steps of the Allied forces by strolling the legendary beaches of Normandy. Walking along the shores of Juno, Sword, Omaha, and Utah Beach, guests will have the chance to see the craters from cataclysmic bombings which occupy the landscape to this day. Other highlights include visits to the Airborne Museums in Caen and the Musée de la Reddition (the Museum of Surrender), where the causes and consequences of World War II are vividly documented.

On the meditative drive to Reims, travellers will stop in Compiegne and at the Memorial of Internment and Deportation, dedicated to the 40,000 people who were deported to German camps. Later, guests will have time to explore Reims at leisure, the city where the World War II treaty was signed.

Ending in Paris, the Memorials of War tour also offers foodies the chance to dine in one of the world’s most iconic landmarks, the Eiffel Tower and raise a glass to honour the past and celebrate the significant and positive changes exhibited in contemporary England and France.
