European walk tours set to be cheaper in 2016 than 2015

In an industry when almost every travel operator boosts its prices every year, one of Europe’s leading self-guided walking tour operators, On Foot Holidays, plans to actually drop its 2016 fares following a weakness in the Euro.

The announcement is good news for nature-loving Australian travellers already hit with a weaker Aussie dollar, with On Foot Holidays Director, Simon Scutt, flagging a walk tour price drop in 2016 of two to four per cent.

“Due to the weakness of the Euro, we can guarantee no price increases for 2016, with an expectation prices will generally fall by up to four per cent,” Mr Scutt, adding prices usually rose by three to five per cent each year previously through inflation. “This will be welcome news for Australians who dream of walking some of the world’s most beautiful trails but have weaker AUD to deal with,” he said, explaining that 2016 prices will be confirmed on in late October.

One of On Foot Holidays’ inn-to-inn walks on which Australians can save in 2016 is its six-night ‘Bohemian Paradise’ hike in the Czech Republic, a trail dotted by fairytale castles and soaring rock towers.

Once a kingdom in the Holy Roman Empire, the Czech region of Bohemia is known for its mountain ranges, unspoilt pine forests and quaint European towns. The hike will see walkers trek through natural labyrinths of rock towers and visit medieval and gothic castles as well as historic farmhouses and baroque châteaux. The trail also boasts tranquil lakes and meadows and offers walkers the chance to sample local wines, herbal liqueur and beer, for which the republic is famed. Other highlights of the journey include the ‘Museum of the Bohemian Paradise’ in Turnov which showcases the region’s rich and colourful history, allowing Australians to catch a glimpse of rural, middle Europe.

The hike is rated as easy to medium, with five to seven walking hours each day. The best months to walk are April to October. The package includes six nights’ accommodation, all breakfasts and luggage transfers – meaning walkers simply carry a day pack. 2016 walks will be cheaper than the 2015 price of £450 (approximately A$957, subject to exchange rate changes), twin-share, with the final price to be set in October. Single room supplements are available and extra nights in Prague at the end of the hike can be booked with On Foot Holidays.

Based in the UK and specialising in the ‘art of slow travel’, On Foot Holidays offers international walkers 24 self-guided tours across unspoilt areas of Europe for independent travellers who prefer intimate encounters with destinations. Walkers can select their own departure dates and all routes are designed by locals and tested by staff from On Foot Holidays.
