China set to pitch Hainan to international travellers

The Chinese Government has this week announced plans to develop the Southern Island of Hainan into a top international tourism destination, state-controlled media has reported.

Dubbed locally as “China’s Hawaii”, the island of Hainan has long been popular with domestic tourists, and now it appears that the Chinese Government is looking to push the destination to foreign travellers as well.

China intends to lift the value-added output of tourism in Hainan to more than 8% of the island’s GDP by the year 2015, and more than 12% by the year 2020 – at which point it aims for Hainan to be a top international destination.

Additionally the government is planning to shape the island into a base of agricultural production, as well as stimulating development for more real estate and hotel projects.
