Results of a recent survey found that New York City was the most expensive destination in the world for a traveller to get sick, with three nights in intensive care costing an average of $64,000.
Conducted by International SOS, the organisation looked at the average cost of a night in intensive care and found New York, Hawaii and Canada as the three most expensive destinations.
Responding to the results, insurance company AAMI have used the results as a platform to encourage Australians to ensure that they are covered by travel insurance when they travel.
“The US is notoriously expensive for medical costs and is definitely not somewhere you want to get stuck without travel insurance,” said Heather McDonald, AAMI National Travel Manager
“For example, hospitals in popular US destinations for Aussie travellers, like California and Florida, charge up to $8,500 per night in intensive care, while the same treatment in a Hawaiian hospital can set you back up to $10,500 per night.”
North America and Europe were the most expensive regions for medical expenses in the International SOS survey.
