Name: Sylvain Pasdeloup
Position title: Area General Manager, AccorHotels Bali & Lombok and General Manager, Sofitel Bali Nusa Dua
Company name: Accor Hotels and Sofitel Bali Nusa Dua Beach Resort
When and why did you join the industry?
My first job was in 2004, when I took on the role as Assistant F&B Manager at Sofitel Jin Jiang Oriental. The opportunity truly opened my eyes and I became immersed in my new role and the great possibilities that lie ahead of me.
I simply believe that being in the hospitality industry is to take on such a big role, and that can be one of the most exciting things that one could ever experience in their course of their professional tenure.
What do you like most about your job?
Being able to conceptualize products and services that have great potentials to ignite the ‘wow’ factor among our guests. Bringing satisfaction and happiness to our guests can be such a rewarding experience and is a big part of the job in the hospitality industry. Garnering accolades from the media and well-known publications (which we have!) simply adds to the sense of pride and achievement.
What’s one of the biggest achievements of your career so far?
I have had several highlights in my career. These include the many changes that have taken place in our region and that are what makes the ride so exciting. ASPAC is the region so close to my heart. I consider the team as family.
SBND with APEC and IMF in Bali have been tremendous experiences — they’ve been exciting and the hotel is so important to me. Handling the two last presidents and all the ministers on a regular basis was such a pride, as were with recent iconic personalities like Christine Lagarde (WB IMF MD) whom I admire for her engagement in the women cause all over the world. It was such a great experience to be able to discuss with her about our company commitments and philosophy.
What’s the best advice ever given to you and who gave it?
Don’t stay in your comfort zone, you will find it hard to succeed that way. My mom gave me this great advice, which I will forever cherish. It will be one of those memorable quotes that stay on with you, and which can always come back to you when you need that spark of inspiration to succeed further and challenge yourself in the process. More success doesn’t simply come by when you’re feeling the most comfortable.
Who do you admire and see as a role model in the industry?
All my seniors in AccorHotels have been my role model and I admire them for their dedication in the industry. I tried to learn from their individual expertise and I’m honoring that they also been very helpful for me to achieve the best.
What can people expect from your company and what sets it apart from the rest?
We cater to a wide range of different guests. As a family resort, we pay much attention to our little guests. La Villa Des Enfants Kids Club and an outdoor kids’ pool is testament to this. The resort is also set to welcome lovebirds and those who wish to rekindle their love together, as we prepare for the opening of our wedding chapel at the end of the year. The best Sunday Brunch on the island, as well as a luxurious beach club right on our beachfront is just a few features that set us apart from the rest.
What destinations are on your travel bucket list?
I love travelling. I have many of destinations that are still to be fulfilled that have long been on my bucket list. One of these dream destinations of mine just so happens to be South America
What’s a memorable travel experience you’ve had (good or bad)?
One of the most memorable experiences is definitely the time I had enjoying a great day out with my team. The bonding that we created during the journey was truly memorable. It is simply one of those great times during your career that you can cherish for quite a long time.
What are three things you always take with you when travelling?
Parfume, phone, and my gym clothes
What direction do you see the industry heading in over the next five to ten years?
Weddings are a lucrative business in Bali and we have great potential for weddings within our resort, not just for our Australian and Japanese markets, but also for new emerging markets. I believe there are a lot of great new potential markets to explore, especially developing areas such as India and the Middle East. We are also developing long weekend escape packages for our domestic Indonesian guests – our leading market. As they are extremely social media savvy guests, this offers huge potential. We are also developing an all-inclusive lifestyle and sports membership programme with a French “Art de Vivre” concept (typical of Sofitel properties) for outside guests, overseen by a lifestyle concierge.
