Karen Christensen Honoured at CLIA Awards
Respected travel industry veteran, Karen Christensen, was bestowed top honours at the Cruise Lines International Association’s (CLIA) annual Australasian Awards last Saturday evening where she was announced as the winner of CLIA’s 2019 Hall of Fame Award.
The CLIA Hall of Fame Award is a formal recognition to honour an individual whose efforts and accomplishments represent a significant contribution to the cruise industry or noteworthy achievement. Joel Katz, CLIA’s Managing Director for Australasia noted Christensen’s positive impact on the development of the cruise industry during her career saying, “Karen was instrumental in developing the foundation of what CLIA Australasia is today and has successfully championed the professional development of our travel agent community, contributing to the growth of the cruise industry across this region.”
Christensen has played an integral and leading role in the development of cruising in Australasia including laying the foundations of The International Cruise Council Australasia (ICCA), now CLIA, first as Training Manager, where she oversaw the development of fully accredited training and education programs as well as presiding over the operations of ICCA as General Manager, during the phenomenal growth period of 1998-2005. In December 2008, Karen Christensen was elected Chairman of ICCA and served a two-year term in the position.
“I truly am honoured and humbled by this acknowledgement. I’ve been passionate about the cruise industry for more years than I am willing to share, and I feel very privileged to have been involved with CLIA throughout my career in different guises,” said Karen. “There are many successful cruise-selling advisors in Australia that I remember training over 20 years’ ago and watching how their careers and businesses have grown is extremely pleasing.”
Joining Crystal in 2016, Christensen is a key member of Crystal’s global senior management team and is charged with the region’s overall business growth and the roll out of the brand’s evolution from ocean cruise line to a luxury travel brand offering multiple brand extensions by ocean, river, yacht, expedition and air.
