MTA – Vicki Williamson June 2018

Family background: Originally from the Atherton Tablelands near Cairns, grew up in Brisbane.

What did you do before you became an MTA Member? Worked for Wiltrans International (GSA for RSSC, Crystal & Paul Gauguin); before that Abercrombie & Kent and before that, worked 10 years in Hong Kong as Manager of Corporate Holiday and Card Member Travel. And before that… Jetabout Holidays Sydney.

When and why did you join MTA? February 2017. I wanted a more flexible lifestyle and better control over my working life.

What do you like most about working as an MTA Member? The support of my colleagues – you’re not just a number, you’re a member of the MTA family.

Do you have a specialised area in travel? Luxury cruising.

What’s one of your biggest personal achievements? Escorting 120 classical music and ballet lovers around Europe.

What’s the biggest thing you’ve learnt since starting as a home-based travel agent? The importance of constantly working to improve your business and getting your name out in a very competitive market.

What sets MTA apart from the rest? The people – they are passionate about what they sell. They are true professionals.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given and who gave it? My father always told me to be the girl who decides to go for it. A life full of ‘what ifs’” is a life full of lost opportunities.

Who do you admire and see as a role model in the industry? Natural Habitat Adventures’ founder and president, Ben Bressler.

What destinations are next on your travel bucket list?  Antarctica and Rwanda for the gorillas.

What’s the most memorable travel experience you’ve had (good or bad)? Coming over the crest of a hill in Tanzania and encountering the Serengeti animal migration.

What three things do you always take with you when travelling? A good book, my collection of scarves and my favourite LBD (little black dress).

Which famous person would you most like to travel with and where to? It would be Ricky Gervais and Africa to hear and see him take on the professional shooters!

What do you find yourself doing on your weekends? Relaxing on Adelaide’s Tennyson Beach dreaming of my next holiday adventure!

What direction do you see the industry heading in over the next five to ten years? I hope it will continue to move towards responsible adventure travel and ecotourism. This is the only planet we have and I believe people now understand the importance of maintaining the balance with nature. I also believe companies whose philosophy it is to ‘give back’ to the local communities will attract a larger audience.
