Channel Nine will be screening three half hour episodes featuring this journey, Saturday 16, 23 and 30 June 2018.
Scenic’s 17 day Unforgettable Douro, Lisbon and Madrid itinerary commences with David exploring Lisbon – one of the oldest cities in Europe, older even than London and Rome – and the home of the famous Portuguese Tarts. Here David explores the nautical history of this once great seafaring country and discovers the delights of Sintra – a small resort town in the foothills of the Sintra Mountains.
From Lisbon, David travels to Porto, and his 5-star all-inclusive luxury river cruise on board Scenic Azure, which travels the length of the Douro River through the famed wine regions that produce a variety of wines from the many highly loved varieties of port to fine fortified reds and whites.
In charming Porto, David explores the lively port city and all its treasures including its landmark attraction, the Palicio de Balsa, before boarding Scenic Azure and the start of the Unforgettable Douro journey.
The following episode sees David exploring the Douro River with a stop at Taourca and the chance to explore the remains of Portugal’s first Cistercian Monastery founded in 1124 and the Ucanha Bridge, regarded as one of the most beautiful medieval bridges in Europe. Continuing on the journey along the Douro, David opts for a Scenic Freechoice stop at the Mateus Palace – home of the famous Mateus Rose.
The river cruise then continues to the Spanish border and what is known as Spain’s “Golden City” – Salamanca – with a guided walking tour of the city taking in the local markets, lunch and of course, a performance of the famous Flamenco dance.
David then explores one of the oldest towns along the Douro – the 400-year-old village of Freixo De Nuamo in the Coa Valley, a town which appears to be frozen in time.
The final episode explores more of the Douro’s finest landscapes before Scenic Azure heads back to the ancient city of Porto, and from there David heads to the bustling metropolis of Madrid with its magnificent Crystal Palace and incredible market scene – the final stop on the Unforgettable Douro with Lisbon and Madrid.
