More Australians visited Canada than ever before during 2017, with visitation up by almost 12.6 per cent on the previous year. A total of 375,395 Aussies made the trip to Canada during the year, typically spending more and staying longer than any other foreign market.

It was a big year for Canada as it celebrated its 150th birthday with a record-breaking 20.8 million tourists from around the world, the highest number in Canadian history.

“These results are yet another reminder of what has been clear for a while now: Canada is back. And more and more, the world wants to come and visit. We are excited to share our vibrant cities, beautiful natural attractions, diverse cultures and proud history with record numbers of visitors,” says the Honourable Bardish Chagger, Minister of Small Business and Tourism and Leader of the Government in the House of Commons.

This new wave of Aussies visiting Canada may be attributed to a number of factors, including increased air capacity, the strong AUD, and the successful marketing campaign integrating consumer, trade and media channels.

“With Air Canada’s direct daily flights from Sydney and Brisbane, and a direct service launching in Melbourne in June, it’s now easier than ever before for Aussies to tick off their bucket-list experiences in Canada,” says Donna Campbell, Managing Director, Destination Canada GSA Australia.

“Through our strong relationships with Canadian trade partners and our dedicated content marketing campaign and PR/trade programs, we are successfully altering the Australian mindset from ‘I’ll visit Canada one day’ to ‘This is the year I must visit Canada’.

“Australians are keen to explore the lesser-known parts of Canada, its cosmopolitan cities, historic Atlantic provinces, and pristine wilderness, and they’re returning repeatedly seeking these diverse adventures.

“We expect continued growth from the Australian market in 2018,” says Donna.
