Statement regarding CNN article
You may have read today’s CNN article on the performance of the Trump International Hotel in Washington, D.C.
Data confidentiality has been the cornerstone of our company’s business during our more than three decades of service to the hotel industry. That is why we were very concerned when, prior to publishing the article, a CNN correspondent informed us that confidential performance data produced by STR for the Trump International Hotel was given to CNN by a third party without the consent of the Trump Corporation.
Upon learning of this situation, we took swift action to notify Trump Hotels & Resorts and to provide CNN with an unequivocal statement about our policy on data confidentiality.
All STR hotel property-level reports are confidential and contain proprietary information. We do not share these reports without client permission. Further, we do not release or discuss with anyone outside of an entity the performance data of any individual property, brand or parent company. As stated in the article, the data that CNN asked us to comment on was not provided by STR, and we did not comment.
As is common practice for STR’s media relations team, we shared market data for the D.C. Luxury class hotel segment as part of an earlier request from CNN. Prior to CNN informing us that it had obtained confidential information, Jan Freitag, STR’s senior VP of lodging insights, provided a CNN correspondent with commentary about the overall market.
We will continue to work with media outlets to provide the appropriate market- and class-level data for reporting on the hotel industry, and most importantly, we will continue to emphasize our clients’ data confidentiality as a core principle of our business.
