‘The Real Penguins of Sydney’ waddle up
Today, Sydney’s only colony of King and Gentoo penguins put on their dancing flippers as they celebrated their first anniversary since joining the Sea Life Sydney Aquarium family just over 12 months ago. But for these waddling friends, double the festivities were in order ahead of tonight’s final episode of their very own popular online mini-series, The Real Penguins of Sydney.
To mark these momentous occasions, the penguins were treated to a party like no other! Their home was decked out with giant disco balls and decorations, an extravagant cake (made of fish and jelly, of course!) was made in their honour, and crowds of guests donned their party hats and joined in a chorus of celebratory song after an advanced screening of the much-anticipated finale. The colony of 33 sub-Antarctic penguins also received extra special VIP treatment, with Sea Life Sydney penguin trainers spoiling them with their favourite fishy feast, bonus play-time, and lots and LOTS of bubbles!
“We are so excited to celebrate one year since our feathery friends joined us at Sea Life Sydney, and can’t believe how fast the time has gone! We are so fortunate to work with these amazing animals every day, and over the course of the year we have grown to know and understand their unique personality traits and characters,” says Danielle Farah, Bird Manager at Sea Life Sydney. ‘’The Real Penguins of Sydney would definitely be their year’s highlight – you can tell it has gone to their heads as they waddle right up to the windows to say hi to their fans all day!
“From sharing Neptune’s attempt to build his ‘Beach Body’, Jeffery practising his dance moves, Wallace’s bad feather days, and Roxy and Steven’s unrequited love story – we’ve loved sharing their lovable penguin-alities with Australia, and watching them fall in love with them just as we have!”
Dedicated to the daily musings of the King and Gentoo penguins which call Darling Harbour home, The Real Penguins of Sydney is an online mini-series produced by Goldman Productions, which takes viewers inside the Penguin Expedition display at Sea Life Sydney and introduces their uncannily relatable funny, playful and bold personalities.
The penguins first arrived at Sea Life Sydney as part of a world first-of-its-kind Penguin Expedition where guests can get up close and personal to the spectacular colony of penguins in a stunningly-themed Macquarie Island inspired exhibit. Penguin Expedition is a permanent addition to Sea Life Sydney and creates an explorer out of each and every guest as they travel in a raft through a rugged sub-Antarctic environment at a cool-but-comfortable six degrees Celsius.
Today’s special anniversary celebration formed part of Sea Life Sydney Aquarium’s penguin enrichment program, where trainers enhance the penguin’s environment with activities and objects to encourage increased behavioural diversity.
The final episode of the five-part series will air tonight Monday 15th January at 7pm on the Sea Life Sydney website.
