The surprising international Schoolies destination
New research from finder.com.au, the site that compares virtually everything, has revealed the surprising international destinations travellers are heading to for Schoolies, which kicks off this week.
The research analysed over 1,000 travel insurance quotes taken out through finder.com.au by 17 and 18 year olds for November to January, and found that Europe is the preferred international region this Schoolies period.
27 percent of Schoolies are planning on heading to Europe, with South East Asia not far behind (24 percent). The South Pacific will see around 11 percent of international schoolies travellers.
However, the most popular country was Indonesia with one in seven planning to head there, followed by the United States and the UK in second and third place.
Bessie Hassan, Travel Insurance Expert at finder.com.au, says the findings represent a more interesting trend.
“We’re seeing Schoolies forgoing their neighbouring countries to head to Europe, 20+ hours away and typically more expensive than somewhere like Bali.”
Ms Hassan warns the schoolies heading overseas to be aware of activities that might void their travel insurance policy – including drinking alcohol.
“For most, Schoolies is about letting loose after the HSC, but it’s important to be mindful of safety.
“A travel insurance policy will not cover claims made for injuries that occurred whilst under the influence of alcohol or drugs, so bear this in mind.”
Ms Hassan reminds travellers to check their travel insurance policy before they leave.
“As with any trip, travel insurance can provide cover for mishaps like lost luggage, extreme flight delays and accommodation cancellation.
“Especially for financially dependent students heading overseas – perhaps for the first time –, a high level of cover is important.”

Safety tips from finder.com.au:
- Make sure your travel vaccinations are up to date – especially for South-East Asia.
- Check your travel insurance covers everything you plan on doing before you do it, particularly if you are going to hop on a moped, bike or rickshaw.
- Buddy up – when you’re out at night make sure you aren’t alone or vulnerable.
- Stay hydrated – Alcohol can induce dehydration and result in a hospital visit so keep sipping water throughout the night and day.
- Be aware of what you’re drinking – If you’re drinking alcohol, only buy pre-bottled beverages.
- Register travel dates with SmartTraveller and take out travel insurance before you go.
