Huma Charity Challenge hits $4 million in fundraising
As one of the original pioneers of the charity challenge concept in Australia, World Expeditions first began operating charity challenges when the concept of fundraising through travel was first conceived in the late 1990’s with the Fred Hollows Foundation.
Huma Charity Challenge was launched by the adventure travel company in December 2013 to provide travellers with the opportunity to take on a challenge in some of the world’s most incredible destinations while fundraising for their favourite charity.
Since then, World Expeditions CEO, Sue Badyari, said Huma has partnered with charities across the globe, fundraising more than $4 million for charity including World Vision, Oxfam and Hamlin Fistula Ethiopa.
“Over the decades, our adventurous travellers have collectively raised vital funds for a range of charities spanning the areas of medical research, humanitarian causes, child protection, animal welfare and environmental conservation,” she said.
The milestone comes with the news that a Huma Charity Challenge team, led by adventurer Heather Hawkins, have reached Everest Base Camp on their challenge to raise vital funds for cancer research with more than $56,000 raised by this specific group of fundraisers.
“This remarkable group of women including Can Too CEO, Annie Crawford, set out on their 23-day circuit trek to Gokyo Lakes and Everest Base Camp on the 17 October,” Ms Badyari said.
“We we thrilled to learn, that after reaching Everest Base Camp safely last Friday they have trekked back to their starting point at Lukla, for their return flight to Kathmandu.
“By all reports, after a nine-hour trek yesterday, they are all reeling from the experience of reaching the base camp of the world’s highest mountain and are looking forward to a hot shower in Kathmandu’s Radisson Hotel. It’s a huge
achievement, on so many levels and we look forward to seeing the team arrive back in Sydney very soon.”
