Bakers of the Southern Highlands have confirmed that the region is certainly ‘Australia’s Home of Pies’ following awards won at the recent Australian Great Aussie Pie Competition held at the Sydney Convention Centre from the 11-14 September. The big winners were The Famous Robertson Pie Shop & Heatherbrae’s
Pies of Sutton Forest who won Gold in the Plain Mince, Red Meat and Vegetarian categories respectively along with Polly’s Pies of Moss Vale & Southern Pies of Kangaroo Valley who won Bronze & Silver in their entered categories.

These positive results follow the hugely successful PIE TIME destination marketing campaign by  along with events conducted by operators in the Southern Highlands throughout the
month of June where the region became the ‘Southern Pie-lands’. Manager Destination Southern Highlands Steve Rosa said “the unique and integrated campaign has performed beyond our expectations generating increased awareness and visitation for our region during our off-peak season coupled with some great business results in which most participants in the campaign claimed increased levels of business against the same period of time in 2016. It is estimated that Pie Time also helped to grow the visitor economy ‘pie’ with a record number 100,000 pies being produced and sold by 53 pie venues during June, with an injection of over $1,000,000 into the local visitor economy.”

Organiser of this year’s inaugural Southern Highlands Pie Competition Elizabeth Nichols said “it is pleasing to see that a number of the entrants in our Pie Competition went onto to do well at the nationals in Sydney. Our local competition attracted 101 entries from over 31 outlets and included 14 apprentices and 8 community/home bakers. We are now looking to expand our local competition to become a State wide Pie Competition to create greater competition for our local bakeries so that the standard of pies produced continues to be the best in Australia.”

A short six minute documentary has been produced that follows two of this year’s Pie Competition apprentices in Josh Nickl from Gumnut Patisserie and Angus Fitzgerald Southern Rise Bakery. The documentary highlights the two young apprentices’ competition expectations, rivalry, wins and losses along with the benefits of competing in their first inaugural Southern Highlands Pie Competition. The documentary can been seen HERE

Plans are now underway to ‘cook up’ an even bigger and better campaign and range of pie events and experiences for 2018 with a meeting of interested parties set down for Wednesday 18 October 10.30am at Peppers Craigieburn Bowral
