Fraser Island: Anglers await reopening of closed waters

Waters between Indian Head and Waddy Point will be open to Fraser Island anglers from midday 30 September 2017.

The area has been closed to all fishers from 1 August as the annual finfish spawning takes place.

Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol district manager Greg Bowness praised local anglers for their adherence to the closures, and their commitment to assisting in the preservation of the fishery.

“Closures are a really important fisheries management tool, and allowing spawning events will ensure many more years of angling for future generations,” he said.

“QBFP officers conducted routine monitoring of the closed waters, size and possession limits across Fraser Island during the period of the closure. The majority of fishers were found to be compliant with minor offences only detected relating to size and possession limits.”

No fishers were found to be fishing in the closed waters.

Mr Bowness said the closure did not apply to the collection of worms and pipis by hand.
