Happiness flows in Fiji with its first ever Olympic Gold
The entire nation of Fiji and the hundreds and thousands of tourists around the world who call Fiji their second home are celebrating the gold medal-winning performance of the Fiji Sevens.
The Fijians beat Great Britain 43-7 in the nail-biting match that cemented Fiji’s status as the world’s top rugby nation.
The remarkable win is a boost for the nation that is still recovering from the devastation of cyclone Winston that hit the Fiji islands in February this year.
“The people of Fiji displayed a fighting spirit post-Winston and this spirit was evident again today with this remarkable win by our national team,” said Carlah Walton, Regional Director Tourism Fiji Australia.
“This win will consolidate Fiji’s position as a global force in 7’s rugby and has put a smile on the faces of a global audience. It reminds the world that happiness can find you on our beaches, in our turquoise waters, through the smiles and welcoming ‘Bula’ of our people as well as on the Rugby pitch.”
The team will return to Fiji at the end of August to a homecoming of heroes, led by Coach Ben Ryan, who has guided the Fiji Sevens team since 2013 to this historic win for the Pacific nation.
