Jingle Bells Ring for Personal Travel Managers

Whether it’s a winery lunch for eight people in Tasmania or an overnight cruise out of Perth, TravelManagers’ personal travel managers (PTMs) have once again demonstrated their knack for celebrating the passing year with fun and style.

TravelManagers’ Executive General Manager, Michael Gazal, says each state, and even regions within a state e.g. Newcastle/Hunter Valley, hold their own, individual party.

For Victoria-based PTMs, this year’s event took the form of a three-course lunch at Melbourne’s fabulous, riverside Wharf Hotel. With 62 PTMs and four suppliers in attendance, there was considerable potential for a fun, festive event, and attendees were not disappointed.

Gazal says the company is very fortunate to have the support of key suppliers who are generous in their support, often providing spot prizes that add to the festive nature of the events and give Santa a run for his money.

“For example in Melbourne, Nexus Holidays gave away three spots on a famil for March/April next year and Allianz gave away one year’s free travel insurance,” Gazal explains. “In addition, Qatar Airways provided two gift packs and Collette gave away four bottles of wine.”

Western Australian PTMs raised the bar even further with their Christmas party: an overnight cruise on the newly re-launched and refurbished P&O Australia vessel, the Pacific Eden. According to TravelManagers’ Alison Banks, who is TravelManagers’ business partnership manager (BPM) for Western Australia, one of the highlights of the cruise was the white-themed “Bianco” party.

“We reinterpreted the white dress code by dressing in black, with white gloves and feather boas. Everyone looked amazing and made a huge visual impact amidst the sea of white,” she says.

Whatever the format of the event, all participants agree that they’re great for strengthening the company’s culture of mutual fun, support and respect.

As Anna Bayley, who is representative for Tasmania’s Sandy Bay explains, “we can share a few ideas, but more importantly, have a laugh and enjoy everyone’s company”.

The events are also an opportunity for PTMs to build on their relationships with both their suppliers and with representatives from the National Partnership Office (NPO). A total of seven suppliers and 23 PTMs attended the end-of-year function for Queensland-based PTMs, which took the form of a long, lazy lunch at Brisbane’s Cloudland.

“We had a fun day celebrating a great year and it was lovely to have the suppliers there, supporting TravelManagers by enabling PTMs to come and enjoy the Christmas fun,” says Erin Ross, who is representative for Queensland’s Mount Cotton.

Gazal says one of the most pleasing aspects of the Christmas functions is to realise just how far TravelManagers’ PTMs are prepared to travel in order to take part in them.

“Our personal travel managers travel some pretty significant distances to attend these events – one of the furthest this year was Kathryn Green driving 720 kilometres from Esperance to Perth to join her colleagues aboard the Pacific Eden. It doesn’t matter what size the group is – whether they’re young or old, in a large city or remote rural community, everyone enjoys each other’s company and plays hard. These are the events that cement our reputation for fun-loving, hard-working travel professionals.”

Banks agrees that the Christmas parties perform a vital role in maintaining strong relationships with suppliers and fellow PTMs, but adds that the PTMs also place a high value on the opportunity to further cement their bonds with the many representatives from various support areas within the NPO.

“We even had a ten-month old baby and a ten-year-old son in attendance,” she says. “This flexibility and willingness to accommodate all sorts of personal situations is something that I really value about TravelManagers.”
