Name: Mark Luckey
Position title: Managing Director
Company name: roomsXML
When and why did you join the industry?
I left my full time job when I was 25 and started a software development company. After a couple of years, I was approached by and formed a partnership with an Indian company, WebSource Technologies. A few more years and they had been developing travel management platforms and were creating roomsXML. They asked if I was interested in getting on board.
Here we are.
What do you like most about your job?
The places my job takes me, from the office walking distance from home, to conferences in London, trade shows in Bangkok, board rooms in Sydney, development meetings in Pune and working with our charity partners in Bangalore. Each place has its own unique people, challenges, circumstances, events , cultures and personalities. It’s a rich and rewarding mix.
What’s one of the biggest achievements of your career so far?
Building a team that do a fantastic job, that I like being around, that’s part of a company with a great culture that is not just profitable but has enough to make a difference.
What’s the best advice ever given to you and who gave it?
I ask a lot of questions so I have been given a lot of advice! Tough question. Relevant to roomsXML, my dad Kerry clarified for me, in a round about way, that I needed to find a way to do hundreds of transactions with every agent.
Who do you admire and see as a role model in the industry?
There’s a few and it might sound like I am sucking up but hopefully they don’t think so.
Karsten Horne from Reho has a strong triple bottom line philosophy I find inspiring. Barry Mayo expresses himself well, even of others do not always agree with his perspectives. At the other end, Jake Hower has a great technology mind that is just begging to be harnessed by a larger company.
What can people expect from your company and what sets it apart from the rest?
Put simply – easy to use, good product, there when you need us.
We provide the best value proposition that a wholesaler can offer through a combination of product, price, service and support to build long term relationships with travel agents.
What destinations are on your travel bucket list?
Okinawa, to learn from the masters.
What’s a memorable travel experience you’ve had (good or bad)?
Seeing a full on solar eclipse in Lyndhurst, edge of the desert, in 2001.
What are three things you always take with you when travelling?
Electronics, ear plugs, gym gear
Name someone famous you’d like to travel with and a destination you’d like to go with them.
Mick Fanning, for surfing lessons in Hawaii
What direction do you see the industry heading in over the next five to ten years?
Big data, less privacy, Facebook started it, NDC will continue it….but seriously, how can anyone answer this? 5 years ago we didn’t have Uber or AirBnB … the disruptors come thick and fast.
