Michael Callaghan, General Manager at SureSave

MC

When and why did you join the industry?
I joined SureSave, almost two years ago. Before that, I was happily working in media, but felt that something was missing. I now get to work with people who are inspired by travel, who help travellers every day – there’s something satisfying about that.

What do you like most about your job?
The people around me, and their passion for assisting travellers and their commitment to our industry.

What would you be doing if you were not in the industry?
I’d probably still be working in media somewhere.

What’s one of the biggest achievements of your career so far?
Without doubt, the recent launch of the refreshed SureSave brand and the introduction ofour innovative Agent Console. The new direction of SureSave has been 18 months in the making and I’m very proud of what we’ve delivered.

What’s the best season to travel and where would you go?
I love winter escapes – usually South East Asia, anywhere with a beach, pool and exotic local foods.

What’s the best advice ever given to you and who gave it?
My mother once told me to ‘walk a mile in someone else’s shoes’. It still helps navigate me now, both personally and professionally.

Who do you admire and see as a role model in the travel and tourism industry?
Plenty of people, but mostly the retail agents. The service they continue to offer travellers in what has become a rapidly changing environment is admirable.

What are your hobbies?
With three young children, their hobbies have become my new hobbies. I look forward to reclaiming some of my Saturday’s back in the next few years.

What destinations are on your travel bucket list?
The Galapagos Islands.

What’s a memorable travel experience you’ve had (good or bad)?
Sailing down the Nile on a Felucca – the best three days of lazing on deck with spectacular scenery.

What are three things you always take with you when travelling?
My iPad, a toothbrush and my SureSave travel insurance policy.

Name someone famous you’d like to travel with and a destination you’d like to go with them.
David Attenborough, to the Galapagos Islands – that way I could tick two things off my bucket list at once.

What direction do you see the industry heading in, in the next five to ten years?
Over the next five to 10 years, I predict there will be a continued re-invention of service and a large adoption of mobile delivered information so agent’s expertise and support can travel with their customers wherever they explore
