LATAM Airlines Group achieves highest performance in Dow Jones World Sustainability Index in the environmental category

latamairlinesLATAM Airlines Group, comprised of LAN Airlines and its affiliates, and TAM Airlines, is the first airline group in the Americas to join the Dow Jones World Sustainability Index, after being chosen from a select group of companies leading in sustainability for its administration of economic performance, social responsibility and environmental management.

This year, LATAM Airlines Group achieved the highest performance worldwide across the industry in the environmental category, in the areas of Operational Eco-Efficiency and Climate Strategy/ Climate Change Governance. Over the past few years the Company has focused on fuel efficiency and reducing CO2 emissions, having one of the lowest rates of CO2 emissions per passenger-mile in the global airline industry.

Being invited to join the index, ranks LATAM Airlines Group as one of only two companies, along with Air France-KLM Group, in the aviation industry currently listed in the Dow Jones World.

Mr Enrique Cueto, CEO of LATAM Airlines Group highlighted the company’s entry into the index: “Entering the Dow Jones World Sustainability Index is an honour for all the employees of LATAM Airlines Group. It is the result of years of work, and it demonstrates that we are making progress on the right path to where we want to go, which is to be among the three best airlines in the world. Being part of this index confirms the commitment with our stakeholders towards being a more transparent and responsible company in the economic, environmental and social aspects.”

Among specific activities that the company is constantly working on, the executive highlighted the completion of LATAM Airlines Group’s first Sustainability Report that was released this year, accounting for the Economic, Social Responsibility and Environmental actions carried out. “We trust the road we have taken and will continue to work to be a contribution to the region through connectivity and our operations,” added Mr Cueto.

The Dow Jones Sustainability Index analyses the economic, environmental and social performance of companies, focusing on long-term performance, and is the most important sustainability indicator worldwide. The evaluation system is based on a best-in-class approach, choosing the companies with the best performance in its industry each year.

Among the economic, social and environmental dimensions that the Dow Jones Sustainability Index uses to assess the selected companies are: Social Reporting, Human Capital Development, Stakeholder Engagement, Corporate Governance, Environmental Management, Environmental Reporting, Climate Strategy, Efficiency and Customer Relationship Management, among others.

LATAM Airlines Group has been included for two consecutive years in the Dow Jones Sustainability Emerging Markets Index for its leadership in corporate sustainability. It is the first airlines group to enter the Sustainability Emerging Markets Index.
