Mr Bradford is the former CEO of the Port of Melbourne and has extensive, senior executive experience in ports and tourism.
Outgoing chairman, Chris White, a member of the selection panel, said Mr Bradford been a standout in a field of high-quality candidates.
“Importantly, for CDU and our future, Stephen Bradford is one of the most experienced people in Australia across a broad range of tourism and maritime industries and has a great appreciation of the issues,” Ms White said.
“Stephen has more than 40 years’ experience across port and transport logistics.
“For CDU, directly in his role as the Port of Melbourne CEO, he has personal knowledge and experience of the infrastructure challenges and needs for the cruise industry now and the future.
“The CDU Economic Impact Study (2013-14) is reporting that the international and domestic cruise industry contributed over $3 billion to the Australian economy. We need to ensure that CDU and cruise industry continues to grow.”
“Stephen has had extensive experience operating at a national level politically, engaging with both State and Federal members of parliament and public servants,” Ms White said.
Mr Bradford has held the roles of CEO of Great Southern Railway, and Managing Director of Serco Australia Transport owner of The Ghan, Indian Pacific and Overland train services. He is, with Flagstaff Partners, assisting with a project for the Chief Minister of the NT to develop an overarching strategy for the Darwin Harbour foreshore, Darwin port facilities and Marine Industry Park.
“Stephen has also been a board member of Ports Australia, the Transport Mutual Insurance Association Ltd and Deputy Chair of Tourism and Transport Forum,” Ms White said.
“Critically for CDU and its future development and success, Stephen is a strategic thinker, a great mentor and will encourage senior industry stakeholders to the CDU table” Miss White said.
Mr Bradford said that he was excited to be appointed as CDU’s Chairman.
“I have been involved with CDU for a number of years and it is an organisation I have always strongly admired,” Mr Bradford said.
“I look forward to engaging with all CDU members, cruise ship operators, governments and stakeholders on issues relating to continued growth of the Australian cruise shipping industry”.
Mr Bradford is the first external chairman appointed to CDU’s Management Committee.
