Mexico’s tourism bureau Fonatur has partnered with Australia based EarthCheck to promote Australians to go on eco-tour adventures to Mexico.
The partnership means that EarthCheck will provide independent monitoring of Mexico’s claims about the environmental, social and cultural credibility of its eco-tourism experiences.
Fonatur will use EarthCheck’s software to measure local Mexican communities against eco-tourism benchmarks.
EarthCheck founder and chief executive officer Stewart Moore said that the partnership marked an exciting development for eco-tourism in Mexico.
“We hope to take the key learnings from over ten years in Huatulco and share these with the next generation of destinations such as Loreto and Ixtapa,” Mr. Moore said.
“This partnership provides opportunities to work across Mexico and help lower the environmental impact and operational costs while supporting local communities.”
According to EarthCheck’s FutureWatch Report 2010, 73 per cent of respondents wanted to know about the sustainability of a destination before travelling there.
