Sunshine Coast Development Ltd (SCDL) has welcomed a proposed privately-funded $90 million water theme park, hotel and function centre, saying it will significantly boost the Sunshine Coast’s reputation as one of Australia’s most popular destinations for families and groups.
Sunshine Park is being proposed by specialist water theme park developers, Waterplay Pty Ltd, which has previously developed water-park projects in Malaysia and the UAE.
The proposed park is located at Glenview on the Steve Irwin Drive, close to other major tourism and entertainment attractions such as the Australia Zoo, Aussie World and Big Kart Track.
The park would be developed on a 24ha site and would offer a wave pool, water slides, canoeing and other water based activities, along with a hotel, holiday village, restaurants and function facilities.
It has been estimated that the project could create up to 430 jobs in the construction phase and 250 jobs during its operation, with first stages of the Park’s development scheduled to begin in 2015
Sunshine Park would complement the proposed State Government development of a Motocross and BMX park at nearby Mooloolah.
Sunshine Coast Destination Limited CEO, Simon Ambrose, said the new developments would add significantly to the diversity of attractions the Sunshine Coast offered visitors.
“The precinct around Steve Irwin Drive is earmarked for theme park style projects, with its accessibility to Brisbane and Brisbane Airport making it particularly suitable,” he said.
“The water-park will complement the Sunshine Coast’s many other beach and water attractions, and grow the region’s reputation for adventure-based activities.
“With the region now serviced by direct international flights, and with Brisbane Airport just an hour’s drive away, the Sunshine Coast offers great potential for developers of tourism infrastructure. We have proposals for a new eco-based zipline development to allow visitors to experience the Hinterland rainforest, a Mooloolaba operator recently became the first operator in Australia to offer swimming with humpback whales, and we have a record number of events and festivals on our books. It is a very exciting time for tourism on the Sunshine Coast.”
