Virgin Australia targeting miners with new route

Virgin to add direct Cairns and Weipa services.

The Newman Government’s decision to deregulate air services between Cairns and Weipa has made way for Virgin Australia to increase its network, with direct daily flights between the two destinations.

Launching in 2014 after the route is deregulated, the airline said it will utilize its ATR Turbopop aircraft on the route to bring customer choice and increase competition in the area.

Virgin Australia chief commercial officer Judith Crompton said Weipa is an important mining centre and is in “much-need” of competition and lower fares.

“In Queensland the mining boom is continuing to drive increased demand and open up routes that can sustain competitive air services,” Ms Crompton said.
